Sunflower Pathology Working Group

Diseases are the most significant biological yield-limiting factor of sunflower in United States. However, limited reference and Extension literature on sunflower diseases exist, which frequently results in misidentification of diseases and a lack of IPM recommendations. In 2013, several pathologists from the Northern Great Plains formed the Sunflower Pathology Working Group (SPWG). The mission of the SPWG is to provide stakeholders tools to identify and manage diseases by developing and disseminating reference and diagnostic information to growers, Extension Agents/Educators, crop consultants and industry professionals. To date, the SPWG has published a series of diagnostic materials, a book chapter in a technical monograph and have drafted the first sunflower Compendium for American Phytopathological Society (anticipated publication is Spring 2016). In addition, members have collaborated on several research projects, communicate regularly, and meet at least twice annually.
